Mirela Tulbure joined NC State in August 2019 as a Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program cluster hire in Geospatial Analytics. An associate professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, Tulbure is also a member of the Center for Geospatial Analytics. Her research focuses on improving understanding of surface water extent, vegetation and landscape connectivity dynamics and their drivers of change (e.g. climate and land-use) at regional to continental scales. Her approach integrates analyzing time-series of terabytes of satellite and other geospatial data (e.g. hydroclimatic data), spatial statistics, and network analysis based on graph theory (a tool commonly used in computer and social sciences).

Prior to coming to NC State, she was on faculty with the University of New South Wales, where she has led a number of competitive research projects in applied ecological remote sensing. There, she also built the Geospatial Analysis for Environmental Change Lab with funding from the Australian Research Council.
