In the 21st century, the biggest discoveries in the sciences — and the most significant practical innovations — require different disciplines to work together. NC State is leading the way in this integration with the new Integrative Sciences Building (ISB) and broader, campus-wide, Integrative Sciences Initiative (ISI). ISI unites chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, engineering and other fields in the study of the living world’s core building blocks: molecules.

The ISI will facilitate new synergies in research, education and engagement to solve some of the world’s grandest challenges — like cancer, sustainability and infectious disease — and rise to meet the world’s greatest opportunities. The building will serve as the home of the initiative, which will unite the molecular sciences throughout the university.

The Integrative Sciences strategic cluster aims to hire world-class faculty that will bridge existing strengths across departments and colleges and will enhance the interdisciplinary community of scholars focused on education and research in the molecular sciences.

Impact

Our cluster is building on NC State’s strengths in STEM education and research by making substantial investments in world-class faculty members specializing in strategic areas of molecular science. Within the ISI these scholars will collaborate with current faculty, staff, and students, fostering interdisciplinary innovation. Together, they will develop high-impact solutions, driving substantial economic growth in North Carolina and beyond. Moreover, this initiative will equip both undergraduate and graduate students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their future careers.

History

The Integrative Sciences strategic cluster was launched in 2023 to support the ISI and ISB by building on existing faculty strengths in molecular research and education through targeted faculty hiring.
