Environmental Health Science Jonathan Hall
Jonathan Hall joined NC State in August 2021 as a Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program cluster hire in Environmental Health Science. He is a member of the Center for Human Health and the Environment and an assistant professor of biological sciences. Hall’s research focuses on identifying and characterizing gene and signaling pathways that are determinants of skin cancer susceptibility. This includes understanding how cells make decisions to survive or induce programmed cell death in response to DNA damage-induced by UVB solar radiation, tumor stress or infection. His research is focused on these responses in skin/epidermal keratinocytes as these cells are constantly exposed to our environment and often represent the first line of defense to environmental exposure. Hall is also a member of NC State’s toxicology graduate program and Genetics and Genomics Initiative.
Hall obtained a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Michigan State University. He completed his Ph.D. in biochemistry and biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, investigating the role of protein degradation in maintaining genome stability through regulating DNA replication. During his postdoctoral research at NC State, he was the recipient of a NIEHS Ruth L. Kirschstein Individual National Research Service Award Individual Postdoc Fellowship, where he investigated the regulation of UVB-induced DNA damage checkpoints and their role in skin tumorigenesis.
